Students working on the ladybug project

Monday art class at the studio

We are having a lot of fun creating rich backgrounds using glazing techniques and adding textures to it. Students were introduced to transparent, opaque, iridescent pigment, interference and other specialty paints as well as the purpose of various gel mediums.

The background is completed. Next step,  the design for the foreground. I cannot wait to see what the background is going to inspire them...

Art classes at the studio: Learning from the masters, Henri Matisse

Some of my Thursday class students chose to do a project inspired by Henri Matisse, other ones created an artwork based on what they learned during the 7 week program.

Art classes at the studio: Learning from the masters

For the last project, students created an artwork influenced by what they learned during the session.

More artwork inspired by Friedensreich Hundertwasser

Art classes at the studio: Learning from the masters, Friedensreich Hundertwasser

Friedensreich  Hundertwasser (1928 – 2000) was an Austrian architect, painter, ecologist and visionary.  The first time I came across his artwork is when I saw a book about him by Harry Rand (Taschen publisher) at the National Art Gallery in Ottawa this summer. I was attracted by the vibrancy of his colour on the cover.

For this collage, students focused on common themes used in his work such as spiral, "lollipop" trees, drop of water shape.
